Version 3 of Page 1 of My Next Children's Picture Book

Yesterday’s version of the page one landscape looked cluttered and overworked. Today I tried something more graphical. I roughed out the scene with a big round brush then flatted the colors. I some impressionistic trees and a couple of sand dunes. I’m going to put some thought into the volcano — it needs some atmospheric perspective. And then there are the waves. They look like the belong in another painting. I definitely need to learn how to suggest waves rather than paint them literally. I’d like them to be much, much simpler., as simple as the sand dunes.

I proclaim this image finished, but I reserve the right to revisit it and revise. I’m looking at those water splashes the crocs are making. And I might want to highlight the kids better, maybe with a back light. But for now, I feel okay moving on to page 31, which will show the kids standing approaching the massive Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary.
